Multilingual and Intercultural Communication at the Workplace.

Jan D. ten Thije is Professor emeritus Intercultural Communication at the Institute for Language Sciences at the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication Utrecht University.

He previously was an associated professor at Utrecht University (2002 – 2019) and previously Hochschuldozent at the Department for Intercultural Communication at Chemnitz University of Technology (1996-2002), visiting professor at the Department for Applied Linguistics at Vienna University (2001), and lecturer and researcher at the Department for General Linguistics (University of Amsterdam) (1994-1996). He studied General Linguistics and Dutch Language and Culture in Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam) and received his PhD at Utrecht University (1994) with research focusing intercultural discourse in advisory institutes.

His main fields of research concern institutional discourse in multicultural and international settings, lingua receptiva / receptive multilingualism, intercultural training, language education and functional pragmatics.

He coordinated the Master programme Intercultural Communication between 2007 and 2019 at the Department of Language, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University.

He  is editor in chief of the  European Journal for Applied Linguistics (EuJAL) published by Mouton de Gruyter Series editor of  Utrecht Studies in Language and Communication (USLC) published by Brill Publications, Leiden.

He was pianist of the ‘Het Amsterdams Volks- Salon- en Amusementsorkest‘
